Finding the Right Kind of Dog Bed

Pet Stop • Dec 28, 2012

You value safety and comfort, and so does your dog. Just like you lock your doors and fasten your seatbelt, your dog will benefit from the security of an electric dog fence, and in the same way you get comfortable in your bed at night, your pet can have a bed that fits them perfectly.

It’s tempting to let your dog sleep with you, but if you have a larger dog (or one that insists on sleeping in the middle of your bed!), this can cause you and your dog to sleep poorly. Getting your pet used to a comfortable bed of their own is the best thing you can do for both of you.

How to Choose a Dog Bed

The most important part of choosing a dog bed is finding the right size. The ideal bed will allow your dog to stretch out completely without touching the floor. Measuring your dog from nose to tail will give you an idea of how big his or her bed needs to be.

Once you have the right size, you’ll have to choose a type. There are plenty to pick from, and the key is to find the right one for your dog. For smaller dogs, snuggle beds are a good pick. Soft walls around a flat bed help your smaller dog stay warm.

Pillow beds are great for small- to medium-sized dogs and are extremely comfortable, molding a bit to the shape of your dog. You can find pillow beds for larger dogs, as well, but you might have to look a little harder or have them custom-made.

Flat, soft beds are the way to go for larger dogs, and are often smaller, softer, lined versions of the type of mattress you might sleep on. The lining will help your big dog stay warm and comfortable while the size will accommodate them, allowing them to stretch out comfortably.

A little note for your convenience and your dog’s comfort: find a dog bed with a removable cover for washing, or buy a cover for it. Trying to wash a dog bed by hand is a chore neither one of you will enjoy!

Whether you’re picking out electric pet fence packages or choosing the right bed, taking care of your pet will be returned with lots of love and affection.
